The Short Answer
You can have both VA care and Medicare - and most veterans should. They cover different things, work different ways, and create a stronger safety net together than either alone.
What VA Covers
VA care is comprehensive within the VA system: primary, specialty, mental health, prescriptions, and some long-term care. It does not cover most non-VA emergency care unless preauthorized.
What Medicare Adds
Medicare opens up non-VA hospitals, doctors, and specialists. For a veteran who lives 90 minutes from the nearest VA, that flexibility is critical.
Common Combinations
- VA + Medicare A only (defer B if employer-covered).
- VA + Medicare A & B (most common at 65+).
- VA + Medicare Advantage (allowed, with caveats about VA-only providers).
- VA + Medigap (most flexibility, highest cost).
We help you pick based on your VA care patterns and where you live.
