Who Qualifies
A "life-changing event" lowered your income: marriage, divorce, death of spouse, work stoppage or reduction, loss of pension, employer settlement, or income-producing property loss.
Step-by-Step
- Download Form SSA-44 from ssa.gov.
- Mark the life-changing event.
- Provide documentation (retirement letter, divorce decree, death certificate, etc.).
- List estimated current MAGI for the year.
- Submit by mail or in person at any Social Security office.
Timing
File the appeal in the same year as the event when possible. Decisions take 30-60 days. If denied, you can appeal to an administrative law judge.
